Track bikes essentially have one purpose - heading forwards very quickly - whilst they can be used on the road, they're ideally suited to riding within a velodrome - a fixed gear and no brakes makes anything else a tad difficult! Usually very aerodynamic and stiff, they're ideal for the budding Hoy or Pendleton! Alternatively if you're more into other forms cycling, I've got loads of Road Bikes listed, and for the off-roaders amongst us, a decent selection of Mountain bikes too.
