B'Twin Rockrider E-ST 500 Mid-Drive Motor Electric Mountain Bike
Here we have the mid drive version of the E-ST 500, which as the name suggests is pretty much identical to the original 500 E-MTB, but with one key difference; the Brose C alloy motor is situated by the bottom bracket and chainset. Hence the Mid(dle) Drive.
Rather than having a bulky rear hub motor, Rockrider have positioned the motor low down and with a central centre of gravity, making the E-bike feel more balanced and handle more like a traditional MTB. Mid-drive motors are usually pedal assist, and so you have to be actually pedalling (rather than freewheeling) for the motor to help you along.
The Brose motor in question provides more power than the standard E-ST 500, with 50Nm torque and a built in Torque sensor, with maximum assistance and speed set at 280% and 25km/h respectively. You can view your current status on the handlebar mounted Ergo 500 display, which shows all the main info you require including current assistance mode, speed, distance, battery level and much more.
The battery supplied will be either a Samsung SDI or LG 420Wh cell with 2 hours 45m runtime. Both are guaranteed for a minimum of 500 charges for peace of mind.
As per the rest of the similarly priced Rockrider E-Bikes (and most of their Mountain Bike range too!) the finishing kit is all own brand components - handlebars, stem, seatpost, saddle, grips etc. It's all decent stuff, but by specifying their own branded parts rather than using 3rd party means Rockrider can reduce costs and pass these savings onto the consumer.
One slight surprise is that Rockrider have only provided 160mm rotors instead of the 180mm diameter specified on many of their other E-bikes. This could be because of the inclusion of the mid-drive motor, but either way you should be able to upgrade these to 180mm for around £30 at a later date if you feel the brakes don't have enough bite. Either way, the brakes have been upgraded to hydraulic rather than the mechanical system on the E-ST 500, for more predictable and virtually maintenance free braking.
The drivetrain is a 1x8 Microshift Acolyte system, with a 12-42 cassette powered by a 34 tooth chainring.
Fancy something different? The original E-ST 500 costs around £300 less, and the budget friendly E-ST 100 is priced even closer to the £1000 mark.
Slightly further up the food chain you'll find the Rockrider E-ST 520 and finally the E-ST 900 E-MTB for just under two grand.

B'Twin Bikes
B'Twin are a popular choice of bike in the UK, partly due to their widespread distribution by Decathlon, and partly due to the value they offer. Their bikes are divided into several slightly overlapping ranges, with Triban best known for road and gravel bikes, and Rockrider gaining a reputation for high performing MTBs to suit every budget. Elops largely consist of a range of city bikes, whereas Riverside focus on hybrids. All in all, B'Twin bikes are well worth checking out given the size of their ranges; there's a model to suit most budgets.
Rockrider Mountain Bikes
Rockrider are Decathlon's off-road offerings, comprising of a series of kids bikes and adult hardtails, full suspension steeds and even a handful of high end E-MTBs.
This brand was launched in 2018, when Decathlon decided to split their B'Twin bikes into different genres. In terms of prices, there's something for everyone, with adult's MTBs starting at just over £200 and rising up to high end lightweight race bikes at nearly the £4000 mark.
If you want to ride off-road, and would prefer to buy from Decathlon, then the Rockrider mountain bike range is for you.
